Former IBO welterweight titlist, Chris Van Heerden, is facing a challenging situation as his girlfriend, Ksenia Karelina, remains in custody in Russia. Karelina has been detained by the Russian government on suspicion of providing money to the Ukrainian military, a country that Russia is currently at war with.

Karelina’s troubles began when she arrived in Russia on January 2nd to visit her family members, including her 90-year-old grandmother. As outlined by SkyNews, she had plans to return to Los Angeles two weeks later. However, upon her arrival in Russia, Karelina found herself being detained at the airport. Although she was eventually allowed to continue her trip, her cell phone was confiscated by the authorities.

The Last Contact

The last communication Van Heerden had with Karelina was in late January when she informed him that she was on her way to retrieve her cell phone. Unfortunately, this was the final time they were able to speak before Karelina’s situation took a turn for the worse.

Russian Allegations

According to the FSB, Karelina, a dual citizen of Russia and the United States, was involved in providing financial assistance to a foreign state that was acting against the security interests of Russia. A video surfaced showing a woman who is believed to be Karelina being led through a building by an official, with her eyes covered by a winter hat.

The United States State Department has been made aware of Karelina’s situation. A Department spokesperson emphasized that the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas is their top priority. They are taking the reports of a detained U.S. citizen in Russia seriously and are committed to providing assistance as needed.

The legal troubles facing Ksenia Karelina in Russia are complex and concerning. As the situation continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize her well-being and work towards a resolution that ensures justice and fairness.
