In a rather unexpected turn of events, the quarterfinal match between Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev at the BNP Paribas Open was disrupted by a swarm of bees. The match, which was already underway, came to a screeching halt as the players found themselves in the midst of a buzzing chaos. Alcaraz could be seen swatting at the bees before seeking cover, prompting the match to be suspended just 19 minutes in with the score tied at 1-1.
As the bees attached themselves to the overhead spider camera and other parts of the court, an unassuming man stepped forward to take matters into his own hands. Without any protective covering, he used a vacuum to clean off the bees, much to the amazement of the crowd. The players were forced to leave the court during this unexpected delay, unsure of when they would be able to resume play.
Upon their return to the court, both Alcaraz and Zverev were met with some lighthearted humor from the chair umpire and each other. Zverev joked about being fine to play on his side of the court, despite the lingering presence of bees. The bee vacuumer, who had become somewhat of a hero during the interruption, was cheered on by the crowd as he sprayed for bees and posed for selfies with fans. The entire situation created a unique and somewhat comical atmosphere amidst the tennis match.
Despite the ongoing concern about the bees resurfacing, the match eventually resumed after a delay of nearly two hours. Alcaraz, in particular, expressed worries about the bees swarming again on his side of the court. However, an ATP Tour supervisor encouraged him to give it a try during the warmup, leading to the eventual continuation of the match. Tournament owner Larry Ellison and former Microsoft CEO Bill Gates were among the spectators in Ellison’s box, witnessing the bizarre turn of events firsthand.
The unexpected intrusion of bees at the BNP Paribas Open quarterfinal match created a memorable and entertaining moment for players and spectators alike. Despite the disruption, the resilience and humor displayed by those involved turned a potentially chaotic situation into a lighthearted and unforgettable experience.
