The New York Yankees have officially announced that Brad Ausmus will be taking over as the bench coach for manager Aaron Boone, replacing Carlos Mendoza. Ausmus, who previously managed the Detroit Tigers and the Los Angeles Angels, brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to his new role with the Yankees.
Brad Ausmus began his coaching career in 2014 when he took over as the manager for the Detroit Tigers. In his first season, he led the team to a successful AL Central title with a record of 90-72. However, the team’s playoff run was cut short when they were swept by the Baltimore Orioles in the Division Series.
After leaving the Tigers, Ausmus went on to manage the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 before joining the Oakland Athletics as their bench coach in 2022. Throughout his coaching career, Ausmus has shown an ability to lead and inspire his teams, making him a valuable asset for the Yankees.
What makes Ausmus’ hiring even more intriguing is his history with the Yankees organization. As a young player, Ausmus was selected by the Yankees in the 1987 amateur draft, starting his professional career with the team. While he was ultimately traded to other organizations, the fact that Ausmus has a connection to the Yankees adds an interesting dynamic to his role as bench coach.
With Ausmus taking over as bench coach, the Yankees will have their third bench coach since Aaron Boone became manager. Josh Bard initially served as Boone’s bench coach in 2018-2019, and Carlos Mendoza took over the position for the next four seasons. Now, it will be Ausmus’ turn to provide support and guidance to Boone as they aim to bring the Yankees back to the postseason.
The Yankees had a disappointing season in 2022, finishing with an 82-80 record and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2016. With Ausmus’ experience and expertise, the team is hopeful that he can contribute to their success and help them reclaim their position as one of the top teams in Major League Baseball.
Before his coaching career, Ausmus had a successful playing career in the major leagues. Over the course of 18 seasons, he played for teams such as the San Diego Padres, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros. Ausmus had a solid career as a catcher, hitting .251 with 80 home runs and 607 RBIs.
With a managerial record of 386-422, Ausmus now looks forward to taking on a new role and utilizing his wealth of knowledge and experience to contribute to the success of the New York Yankees. As he joins the team as their new bench coach, there is excitement and anticipation for what Ausmus will bring to the table as they strive to become a championship-caliber organization once again.
