During Friday morning’s final practice session for IMSA’s highly anticipated season-opener, a devastating pit lane incident left the team in shock and forced a critical change in their lineup. The talented French driver, Clement Novalak, suffered a distressing leg and hip injury as a result of the incident. While the injuries were not deemed severe, they were unfortunately significant enough to prevent Novalak from participating further in the event.
To salvage the situation and keep their team dynamic intact, the decision was made to bring in a replacement driver for Novalak. Enter Pietro Fittipaldi, a rising star in motorsports and a familiar face to the Inter Europol Competition team. Fittipaldi will join forces with Nick Boulle, Jakub Smiechowski, and Tom Dillmann in the No. 52 entry competing in the LMP2 category.
Fittipaldi’s Relatable Experience
Pietro Fittipaldi’s inclusion in the lineup brings not only a talented driver but also a sense of familiarity with the team. Having previously driven the ORECA 07 for Inter Europol Competition in the European Le Mans Series in 2022, Fittipaldi already possesses experience with the car that will undoubtedly prove invaluable during the Daytona 24 Hours.
One notable highlight of Fittipaldi’s experience was his remarkable podium drive at Spa-Francorchamps, where he started at the back of the field. This past success showcases Fittipaldi’s ability to adapt quickly under challenging circumstances, a skill that will undoubtedly be put to the test in the upcoming race.
While Fittipaldi’s inclusion bolsters the team, there will be significant hurdles to overcome. Due to the driver change, IMSA SportsCar Championship rules dictate that the team will likely have to start at the rear of the LMP2 grid, despite qualifying second in class. This setback places immense pressure on the team to showcase their skill and strategy to climb up the ranks.
The race is scheduled to commence on Saturday at 1:40 pm ET, and amidst the unexpected turn of events, Nick Boulle will take up the mantle and kickstart the race for the team. It will be a critical moment, setting the tone for the rest of the race as they navigate their way through the competition.
Optimism and Determination
In the face of adversity, Fittipaldi and the team remain resolute and focused on their goals. Fittipaldi acknowledges the challenging circumstances but expresses his intention to give his best possible performance for the team.
“It’s an unfortunate situation for the team and Clement,” Fittipaldi said solemnly. “They have been doing a great job preparing for the Daytona 24 Hours. I got the call from the team asking me to jump in at the last minute at Daytona, and I’ll be straight into green flag racing. Fortunately, I have experience with this car, and I did the 24-hours last year. It’s not going to be an easy task, but I am looking forward to the challenge, and I’ll do the best job possible for the team.”
With Fittipaldi’s determination and the team’s resilience, the unexpected setback may ultimately become a turning point that unites them, allowing them to conquer the challenges that lie ahead in the Daytona 24 Hours.
