It has been a challenging season for veteran goaltender Ilya Samsonov of the Toronto Maple Leafs. With a .862 save percentage and a 3.94 goals-against average, Samsonov finds himself at the bottom among goalies with at least 10 appearances. In his most recent game against the Columbus Blue Jackets, Samsonov allowed six goals on just 21 shots, resulting in a frustrating 6-5 overtime loss for the Maple Leafs. This game seemed to highlight the struggles he has been facing throughout the season. Samsonov himself admitted to struggling mentally after allowing five goals on 19 shots in a game against the Buffalo Sabres in December.
Samsonov clearly recognizes that his struggles are primarily mental. “I need to figure out everything in my head,” he said. It’s clear that he is aware that his issues extend beyond technical aspects of his game. The pressure and expectations of being a goaltender in the NHL can be overwhelming, and Samsonov is currently experiencing the weight of those expectations.
As a result of his disappointing performance, Samsonov has been loaned to the Toronto Marlies, the AHL affiliate of the Maple Leafs. This move comes after he cleared waivers, with no other NHL team claiming him. It seems that the Maple Leafs are hoping that a change of scenery will help Samsonov regain his confidence and find his game.
Now in his second season with the Maple Leafs, Samsonov’s future with the team is uncertain. After not receiving a restricted free agent offer from the Washington Capitals in the summer, he went to arbitration and was awarded a $3.55 million contract. However, if he continues to struggle, $1.15 million of this contract will come off the Maple Leafs’ salary cap if he remains in the minors.
The Maple Leafs currently find themselves in a competitive position in the Atlantic Division, battling for a playoff spot. With goaltender wins being led by Joseph Woll, followed by Samsonov and Martin Jones, it is clear that Samsonov needs to find his form and prove himself to regain his position as the team’s starting goaltender.
