Amidst the excitement of their recent World Series victory, the Texas Rangers faced a setback with the injuries of two of their star pitchers, Max Scherzer and Jacob deGrom. Both multiple-Cy Young Award winners, their absence from the rotation left a void that the team had to fill. However, there is hope on the horizon as both players aim to make a comeback in the middle of the summer.
Max Scherzer, a three-time Cy Young winner, underwent surgery in December to repair a herniated disk in his lower back. Despite missing the last two weeks of the regular season and the first two rounds of the playoffs, Scherzer made two starts in the AL Championship Series. Unfortunately, he was forced to leave Game 3 of the World Series due to back discomfort, eventually leading to his surgery on December 15.
Jacob deGrom, a two-time Cy Young winner, also faced a setback after elbow surgery that limited his appearance to only six starts for the Rangers. However, he is determined to bounce back and plans to resume throwing this spring.
The potential return of Scherzer and deGrom to the Rangers’ rotation is seen as a game-changer. DeGrom expressed his excitement during the team’s annual FanFest, stating that their return would be like “picking up a couple guys.” The addition of two accomplished pitchers could significantly strengthen the team’s chances in the upcoming season.
According to Scherzer, he started feeling better before experiencing nerve pain in his leg, which led to a diagnosis of a herniated disk. After undergoing surgery, Scherzer has successfully passed the crucial six-week period post-surgery without any complications. He is now focused on rebuilding his strength and finding a balance between recovery and maintaining the condition of his arm.
With 3,367 strikeouts, Scherzer holds the record for the most strikeouts among active pitchers. His performance last season showcased his skills, as he recorded a 3.77 ERA in 27 starts for both the New York Mets and the Rangers. Despite the setback, Scherzer remains optimistic, stating, “You’ve got to keep the glass half-full mentality to this.”
Jacob deGrom, who joined the Rangers last offseason on a five-year deal, had a conditional option to add 2028 based on his elbow surgery. He was off to an impressive start, going 2-0 with a 2.67 ERA and 45 strikeouts in the six games he started. His contribution and the team’s success during those games highlighted his potential impact on the team.
DeGrom is currently undergoing a plyometric training program as part of his rehabilitation process. He is eager to get back on the mound but understands the importance of taking it slow to ensure long-term success. The Rangers are hopeful that deGrom’s return will solidify their pitching staff and increase their chances of continued success.
The return of Scherzer and deGrom is eagerly awaited by the Texas Rangers and their fans. Both pitchers bring a wealth of experience and success to the team, making their comeback a pivotal moment for the organization. The continued progress of their rehabilitation and eventual return to the rotation will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the team’s performance in the upcoming season. As the road to redemption unfolds, the Rangers remain optimistic and determined to maintain their status as champions.
