In an effort to strengthen their catching depth, the Pittsburgh Pirates have made a significant move by signing two-time All-Star catcher Yasmani Grandal. With the addition of Grandal, the Pirates now have a formidable catching lineup that includes Henry Davis, the first overall pick from the 2021 draft, Jason Delay, and Ali Sanchez. Despite spending most of his rookie season as a right fielder, Davis has shown promising potential to become an everyday catcher. Over his 12-year career, Yasmani Grandal has played for four different teams, maintaining a .237 career batting average. During his four seasons with the Chicago White Sox, he hit .234 with eight home runs and 33 RBIs in 118 games in 2023. Notably, Grandal has demonstrated his power-hitting abilities in the past by surpassing the 20-home run mark in five seasons, most recently during his tenure with the White Sox in 2021.
Grandal’s contributions extend beyond his offensive capabilities. Throughout his career, he has earned two All-Star selections. The first came in 2015 while playing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, followed by another in 2019 as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.
