The ATP Tour recently announced its plans to expand Masters 1000 events in both Canada and Cincinnati to 12-day tournaments starting next year. This decision comes after the successful expansion of the Italian Open, Madrid Open, and Shanghai Masters to 12 days last year. This move aims to enhance the overall experience for players, fans, and viewers alike.
In addition to the extended Masters 1000 events, the ATP Tour will also increase the number of ATP 500 tournaments from 13 to 16. Tournaments in Dallas, Doha, and Munich have been upgraded from ATP 250 events to ATP 500 events. This expansion will provide players with more opportunities to compete at a higher level and earn valuable ranking points.
With a total of 60 tournaments across 29 countries, the ATP Tour continues to expand its global reach and impact on the sport of tennis. ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi expressed his excitement for the upcoming season, emphasizing the goal of creating the best possible experience for fans. The record-breaking attendance of five million fans at ATP events last season is a testament to the growing popularity and interest in the sport.
The ATP Tour has also made some significant calendar changes, including the rescheduling of the ATP 500 event in Hamburg from July to May. Additionally, the ATP 250 event in Cordoba Open will be moved to Mallorca as part of the lead-up to Wimbledon. Unfortunately, the ATP 250 event in Estoril, which has been operating under an ATP license since 2015, will not be on the calendar next year.
The ATP Finals will be hosted in Turin, Italy, signaling a new chapter for the prestigious tournament. Meanwhile, the Next Gen ATP Finals will return to Jeddah for a third consecutive year, showcasing the talent and potential of young up-and-coming players in the sport. These hosting decisions highlight the ATP Tour’s commitment to showcasing tennis on a global stage.
The ATP Tour’s expansion plans for 2021 demonstrate a continued effort to innovate, grow, and improve the overall tennis experience for players, fans, and viewers worldwide. With extended tournaments, increased opportunities for competition, and strategic calendar changes, the ATP Tour is poised to deliver an exciting and unforgettable season ahead.
