Former world No. 1 tennis player Simona Halep has filed a lawsuit against Quantum Nutrition, a Canadian company operating as Schinoussa Superfoods. Halep believes that a nutritional supplement produced by the company led to her testing positive for a banned substance and subsequently being given a four-year ban for doping. She is seeking more than $10 million in damages from the company, claiming negligence and false claims that its supplement was legal.
Simona Halep, a two-time Grand Slam champion, tested positive for Roxadustat, a substance commonly used to treat anemia, during the 2022 U.S. Open. The drug is included on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s banned substances list due to its ability to boost endurance by increasing haemoglobin and red blood cell production. According to Halep, she consumed Schinoussa supplements during the tournament and alleges that the Keto MCT supplement she took was contaminated with Roxadustat, a fact that was not disclosed on the label.
Halep vehemently denies ever using banned substances and blames Quantum Nutrition for her tainted urine sample and subsequent ban. The Romanian player argues that the company’s negligence and false claims regarding the legality of its supplement have not only harmed her career but also caused humiliation. Seeking justice, she has filed a lawsuit in a New York state court, requesting punitive damages in excess of $10 million.
Quantum Nutrition, based in Scarborough, Ontario, has yet to respond to Halep’s allegations. However, the company’s founder previously spoke to The Globe and Mail, labeling Halep’s lawsuit an attempt to find a scapegoat and portraying his company as the fall guy in the doping scandal. While appealing her four-year ban imposed by the International Tennis Integrity Agency tribunal, Halep maintains her innocence, contending that she was unaware of the potential contamination of the supplement she consumed. However, the tribunal acknowledged her lack of knowledge regarding Roxadustat but questioned the extent to which the contamination could explain the high levels of the drug found in her urine sample. In a bid to clear her name, Halep recently filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne, Switzerland.
Despite the setback triggered by the doping scandal, Halep remains determined to fight for justice and hopes to see her day in court soon. The tennis star firmly believes that the truth will eventually come to light, exonerating her from the accusations.
