In a thrilling qualifying session at the Buddh International Circuit, it was Valentino Rossi’s outfit that came out on top. Despite a challenging start to the weekend, Rossi’s protege Marco Bezzecchi clinched his third pole position of the season. This achievement marks a significant comeback for Bezzecchi since his last pole position at the British Grand Prix.

Bezzecchi’s teammate, Martin, also showcased his speed, challenging Bezzecchi for pole position. The Pramac rider set the benchmark lap early on, but Bezzecchi responded with an impressive lap time that ultimately secured his place at the front of the grid. Rossi’s outfit has consistently shown their pace throughout the weekend, with Bezzecchi topping the timesheets in all sessions leading up to the final pole shootout.

Reigning world champion Francesco Bagnaia had a difficult Friday, feeling that he was “missing something” in terms of braking. However, Bagnaia was able to overcome these challenges and secure a spot on the front row for the factory Ducati squad. This strong performance demonstrates Bagnaia’s resilience and determination to bounce back from a challenging start to the weekend.

Making their first appearance in Q2 this season, the factory Honda duo of Joan Mir and Marc Marquez showed impressive form during qualifying. Mir and Marquez carried their momentum from the practice sessions into qualifying, securing fifth and sixth place on the grid, respectively. This result is a positive sign for the Honda team as they continue to make progress in their performance.

Unfortunately, Gresini’s Alex Marquez had a setback during the qualifying session. He provisionally qualified in 12th place but did not participate in Q2 due to a crash in Q1. Marquez was taken to the medical centre for checks on his hand and ribs, and it has been confirmed that he suffered fractures to his ribs. This injury will require further evaluation at the hospital.

Bezzecchi’s Dominant Display in Q2

Bezzecchi started Q2 strong, setting the benchmark lap time of 1m44.733s. However, his teammate Martin quickly bettered that time with a 1m44.521s. The two riders traded fastest laps before Bezzecchi unleashed his full potential, setting a blistering lap time of 1m43.947s – the first sub-1m44s lap of the weekend. This outstanding performance solidified Bezzecchi’s pole position and showcased his speed and skill.

Mir and Marquez Utilize Reference Points

Both Mir and Marquez employed a reference strategy during their qualifying runs. Marquez had a small crash at Turn 3 early in Q2 but managed to remount and latch onto the back of Bagnaia, using him as a reference. Mir followed a similar approach and found extra time, securing his best qualifying result since his sixth-place finish at the French Grand Prix in 2022. This strategy proved effective for both riders, highlighting the importance of learning from their competitors.

The qualifying session at the Buddh International Circuit delivered intense competition and remarkable performances. Bezzecchi’s pole position, along with strong showings from Bagnaia, Mir, and Marquez, demonstrated the depth of talent in the MotoGP field. However, the unfortunate crash of Alex Marquez serves as a reminder of the risks involved in the sport. As the riders prepare for the race, it will be interesting to see if Bezzecchi can convert his pole position into a successful victory and if the rest of the field can challenge the dominance of Rossi’s outfit.
