After a thorough investigation, the police in Newport Beach, California, have decided not to pursue charges against Oklahoma City Thunder guard Josh Giddey. The investigation was launched following allegations of an improper relationship with an underage girl, which emerged on social media. In a statement released by the police department, it was stated that the detectives reviewed all available information but were unable to find any evidence of criminal activity involving Mr. Giddey.
The allegations against Giddey first surfaced on social media in late November through an anonymous post. According to the post, a girl who appeared in videos and photographs with Giddey was allegedly a high school junior at the time. However, the social media account responsible for making the allegations has since been deactivated.
Upon learning about these allegations, the Newport Beach police promptly initiated an investigation into the matter. On November 29, they released a statement announcing their active pursuit of additional information and evidence related to these allegations. The department emphasized their commitment to obtaining the facts of the case.
The National Basketball Association (NBA) also took cognizance of the allegations and began its own separate investigation. The league’s spokesperson, Michael Bass, confirmed that they are aware of the findings from the police inquiry and are currently continuing their review of the matter.
During a news conference in early December, NBA commissioner Adam Silver expressed that the league office’s investigation would take a back seat to the Newport Beach police’s process. Silver emphasized that they would work in collaboration with law enforcement and gather whatever information is available to them. However, their actions would be limited to ensure they do not interfere with the ongoing police investigation.
Throughout the investigation, Josh Giddey has chosen not to comment on the allegations. However, since the allegations emerged, Giddey has been subjected to consistent booing during away games. Despite these distractions, Giddey has managed to maintain a commendable performance on the court. He is currently averaging 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder, who hold a record of 27-13.
The Newport Beach police have concluded their examination into the allegations against Josh Giddey, stating that they were unable to find any evidence supporting the claims. The NBA continues to review the matter, albeit working alongside law enforcement to ensure they do not hinder the police investigation. As the investigation progresses, it remains to be seen how this situation will unfold and impact Giddey’s career. For now, he is focusing on his game and maintaining his performance amid the distractions.
