Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo’s contract with the team includes a waiver that replaces the need for him to take a physical with the team. The addendum to his contract, Addendum G, was disclosed by Pro Football Talk and later shared on social media by NFL Network. The waiver states that Garoppolo would not pass the club’s physical examination on account of a preexisting medial and middle cuneiform, and the base of the second metatarsal in his left foot.
Garoppolo underwent surgery for his foot injury soon after signing his $72.75 million, three-year contract with the Raiders on March 17. According to Pro Football Talk, the Raiders have the right to terminate Garoppolo’s contract for any reason related to the waiver. The quarterback will not receive any of his $22.5 million base salary for the 2023 season until he passes a physical. The waiver will be invalidated if Garoppolo remains with the Raiders for two days after their final game of the 2023 season.
Garoppolo’s Injury and Recovery
Garoppolo’s introductory news conference with the Raiders was postponed by a day in March, but the quarterback denied that his foot injury caused the delay. Garoppolo suffered the injury while playing for the San Francisco 49ers on December 4. During organized team activities with the Raiders, Garoppolo has not been on the field. Coach Josh McDaniels has not confirmed whether Garoppolo had surgery, but he has said that there were no surprises in the quarterback’s “process” in Las Vegas.
McDaniels has stated that Garoppolo might not be back on the field until training camp, and that the team is not pushing him to return too soon. Veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer has been working with the first-team offense in OTAs, while the Raiders also have Aidan O’Connell, whom they drafted in the fourth round out of Purdue, and Chase Garbers on their roster.
