Inter Miami CF head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino has made it clear that the club is facing challenges when it comes to signing top players like Ángel Di María and Sergio Romero. The strict roster rules set by Major League Soccer have limited the team’s ability to bring in exceptional talents, as Martino stated in an interview with Paraguayan radio Monumental AM 1080. Despite rumors of talks with Di María, Martino emphasized that the club is not currently in a position to make such signings due to economic and legal constraints.
Martino highlighted the economic restrictions and limits imposed by the league, which have complicate the signing of high-profile players. With the current roster setup, featuring designated players like Leonardo Campana, Sergio Busquets, and Lionel Messi, Inter Miami is already close to reaching the salary cap of $683,750. This leaves little room for additional acquisitions unless the team offloads certain players to free up salary space.
Potential Changes in the Future
While acknowledging the current challenges, Martino expressed optimism about potential changes in the near future. He mentioned that the transfer window will open in mid-July, providing an opportunity for the team to reassess their options and potentially make moves to bolster the squad. Despite the limitations faced by MLS teams compared to Liga MX, Martino believes that the league is evolving and could see adjustments to roster rules in the coming years.
Focus on Current Players
In the meantime, Inter Miami will rely on their existing squad for the ongoing 2024 MLS season and the upcoming Leagues Cup tournament. With a strong start in the Eastern Conference, leading with 21 points in 11 games, the team is focused on maintaining their position and continuing to perform well on the field. However, the prospect of adding players like Di María remains a possibility, pending further developments in the transfer market.
As the season progresses, Inter Miami will continue to assess their options and explore opportunities to strengthen the team. Martino emphasized that the club is open to the transfer market and is prepared to make moves when the timing is right. With games against top opponents like the New York Red Bulls on the horizon, the team will need to be strategic in how they approach roster management and potential signings in order to remain competitive in the league.
