The 2022 Gold Glove awards have marked an unforgettable year for several players who claimed the prestigious honor for the first time in their careers. Among the remarkable achievements was the record-breaking performance by New York Yankees rookie shortstop, Anthony Volpe, and Colorado rookie center fielder, Brenton Doyle, who were among the 13 first-time winners of the fielding honor. These newcomers showcased exceptional talent and cemented their places among the league’s defensive elite.
The Toronto Blue Jays, Texas Rangers, and Chicago Cubs emerged as the frontrunners in terms of team success, with three players from each club receiving the distinguished Gold Glove recognition. Matt Chapman, the reliable third baseman from Toronto, secured his fourth Gold Glove, further solidifying his position as one of the finest in the league. Additionally, outfielder Kevin Kiermaier, also from Toronto, joined Chapman in achieving his fourth career Gold Glove.
In the American League (AL), the impressive list of first-time winners included Texas catcher Jonah Heim, first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, and right fielder Adolis García, along with Volpe. Furthermore, Toronto pitcher José Berríos and Houston utilityman Mauricio Dubón added to the AL’s list of fresh recipients. These players showcased their defensive prowess and left a lasting impact on the field.
In the National League (NL), San Diego right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and utilityman Ha-Seong Kim made their remarkable Gold Glove debut, undoubtedly contributing to their respective team’s success. Philadelphia pitcher Zack Wheeler and Arizona catcher Gabriel Moreno also earned their first Gold Gloves. Meanwhile, Cubs second baseman Nico Hoerner and Pittsburgh third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes showcased exceptional defensive skills, earning their first Gold Gloves.
Hayes’ achievement was particularly noteworthy as he ended Nolan Arenado’s incredible streak. Arenado had won Gold Gloves in his first 10 seasons, matching the record set by Ichiro Suzuki of the Seattle Mariners from 2001 to 2010. The award had become synonymous with Arenado’s name, making Hayes’ victory even more impressive.
While the spotlight primarily focused on the first-time winners, several veterans and repeat recipients should not be overlooked. AL winners Andres Giménez, Steven Kwan, Dansby Swanson, Ian Happ, and Christian Walker secured their second Gold Gloves, representing their consistent excellence in the field. Similarly, Happ’s teammate, Nico Hoerner, earned his first Gold Glove while contributing greatly to the Chicago Cubs’ success.
The voting process involved managers and six coaches from each team, ensuring a fair evaluation of defensive abilities. These individuals cannot select players from their own respective clubs. Since 2013, the voting has also incorporated the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR) defensive index, accounting for approximately 25% of the final decision. This index factors in various defensive statistics, ensuring a comprehensive and unbiased approach to determine award winners.
The 2022 Gold Glove awards celebrate the elite defenders who have demonstrated exceptional skill, agility, and dedication to their craft. The recognition of first-time winners underscores the excitement of new talent entering the league and making an immediate impact. As the season progresses, baseball fans eagerly anticipate witnessing these exceptional athletes continue to leave their mark on the field.
