Ilia Topuria, the first Georgian fighter to compete for a UFC title, has come a long way from his childhood in Georgia. Born in a country where wrestling is deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric, Topuria and his brother Alexsandre took to Greco-Roman wrestling at a young age, dreaming of Olympic success. However, their ambitions were put on hold when their family moved to Spain, seeking a better life amidst political strife between Georgia and Russia.

In Spain, the Topuria family faced challenges in finding a wrestling gym specializing in Greco-Roman wrestling. Despite their initial setbacks, a chance encounter at a local club led them back to their passion for combat sports. The brothers quickly immersed themselves in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and MMA, ultimately dropping out of school to pursue their dreams of becoming world-class fighters.

Adaptation and Language Skills

The constant geographical shifts in Topuria’s early life allowed him to learn four languages by the age of 15. His daily training at the gym in Alicante not only sharpened his combat skills but also facilitated his adaptation to the local customs and way of life. While proudly representing Georgia in the octagon, Topuria considers himself a Spaniard, with deep roots and connections in his adopted country.

Despite his relatively short time in the UFC, Topuria has made a significant impact, remaining undefeated in six fights with notable wins by KO and submission. His team has opted for a more private training setting at Topuria’s home to eliminate distractions, focusing on his upcoming featherweight title fight against Alexander Volkanovski. Joined by his brother, fellow Georgian fighter Guram Kutateladze, and rising Spanish prospect Pepe Torres, Topuria is poised to deliver a stellar performance.

Dreams of Holding a UFC Event in Spain

Looking beyond his imminent title shot, Topuria envisions a future where the UFC holds an event in Spain. His hope is for the UFC to recognize the growing popularity of MMA in his adopted country and consider venues like the iconic Santiago Bernabeu Stadium for a potential fight. With unwavering determination and a supportive team behind him, Topuria is set to make his mark in the octagon and beyond.
