The Florida Panthers are hopeful that Spencer Knight will be back with the team for the fall season. The young goaltender entered the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program in February, which caused him to miss the remainder of the season, including the team’s run to the Stanley Cup Final. However, the Panthers have been in contact with Knight and expect him to return to the fold soon.
Knight’s Performance in the NHL
Knight, who was in his second full season in the NHL, shared responsibilities in net with veteran goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. He started in 19 games and appeared in 21 this past season, going 9-8-3 with a 3.18 goals-against average and .901 save percentage. His last appearance for Florida was on Feb. 18.
Impact of Knight’s Absence
Knight’s absence from the team led to Alex Lyon getting significant playing time for the Panthers in the stretch run of the regular season and the beginning of the playoffs. Lyon went 6-2-1 with a .930 save percentage late in the season, which helped Florida secure the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Lyon is about to become an unrestricted free agent, and the Panthers are likely to discuss his future with the team.
Panthers’ General Manager on Knight’s Return
Panthers general manager Bill Zito has confirmed that Knight is doing well and is expected to return to the team in the fall. “We expect him back in the fold in the fall,” said Zito. He also stated that the team will be in talks with Lyon about his future with the team.
The Florida Panthers are optimistic about Knight’s return to the team for the upcoming season. His absence during the previous season allowed Lyon to step up and deliver solid performances for the Panthers. However, the team is keen on securing their options in goal, including discussing Lyon’s future with the team.
