Jody Scheckter, a South African driver with an illustrious career in Formula 1, managed to secure ten world championship victories out of 111 starts between 1972 and 1980. This impressive track record solidified his place in the annals of motorsport history. However, the more intriguing aspect of Scheckter’s legacy lies in the collection of cars he has amassed over the years.
Scheckter has decided to part ways with twelve of his prized possessions by entering them into RM Sotheby’s Monaco sale on 11 May. The headline attraction of this auction is none other than his ground-effect 1979 Ferrari 312 T4, a vehicle that played a pivotal role in helping him secure a drivers’ title during Enzo Ferrari’s lifetime. Chassis #040, the fourth of five 312 T4s built, holds a special place in Scheckter’s heart as it carried him to back-to-back victories in the Belgian and Monaco GPs.
Apart from the Ferrari 312 T4, Scheckter is also putting up for auction the 1971 McLaren M19A, the car in which he made his F1 debut and secured a ninth-place finish at the United States GP. This vehicle holds sentimental value as it was also driven by legends such as Denny Hulme, Jackie Oliver, and Mark Donohue. Additionally, a recreation of the iconic six-wheeled Tyrrell P34, the 1977 Wolf WR1, a 1973 McLaren M23, and a 1975 Tyrrell 007 will all be up for bidding.
In addition to his F1 cars, Scheckter is parting ways with two Formula 2 vehicles, a 1971 Merlyn Mk21 Formula 3 racer, and his 1970 British Formula Ford championship-winning 1969 Merlyn Mk11a. The collection also includes the 1974 Trojan T101 Formula 5000 title-winning car and a 1960 Alfa Romeo Giulietta SZ sportscar that participated in the prestigious Targa Florio road race.
With a combined upper estimate of £10.9m, the twelve cars from Jody Scheckter’s personal collection are more than just vehicles; they are pieces of motorsport history. Each car has played a significant role in Scheckter’s career and now has the opportunity to find new homes with collectors who appreciate their historical value. As these iconic vehicles go under the hammer, they carry with them the stories and triumphs of a legendary driver and an era of Formula 1 that will forever be cherished.
