After missing 35 games due to soreness in his left shoulder, Clayton Kershaw returned to the mound on Thursday. While he didn’t get the win in his first start since July 27, the Los Angeles Dodgers were just happy to have him back. Manager Dave Roberts expressed his relief, saying, “He’s not the most enjoyable guy when he’s not healthy.” Kershaw pitched five innings, giving up only one run and three hits, striking out four batters and not walking anyone.
Kershaw, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, expressed his gratitude for being able to return and contribute to the team’s success. He stated, “It was great to be back. To get through five innings was good, and hopefully, the leash keeps getting lengthened as I go.” The Dodgers and Kershaw are hopeful that he can stay healthy for a potential playoff run in October. Kershaw himself emphasized the team’s goals, saying, “We want to be part of that more than anything. The division is not won yet. We still got a lot to do.”
Looking Ahead to the Playoffs
With Kershaw’s return, the Dodgers have a boost of confidence. Max Muncy, who drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning, spoke highly of the impact Kershaw has on the team, saying, “Anytime 22 [Kershaw] is on the mound, you have a good feeling about how the game is going to turn out. It’s a boost for everyone in this clubhouse.” The Dodgers won their fifth game in a row against the struggling Colorado Rockies and extended their lead in the NL West to 6½ games over the San Francisco Giants.
A Moment of Persistence
In the eighth inning, the Dodgers showcased their persistence and ability to win in various ways. Pinch-hitter David Peralta walked to lead off the inning, followed by pinch-hitter Jason Heyward grounding into a fielder’s choice. Mookie Betts then singled, and Rockies reliever Daniel Bard walked Freddie Freeman to load the bases. Although the moment seemed challenging, the Dodgers managed to stay focused. Ezequiel Tovar’s incredible over-the-shoulder catch of a shallow left-center field hit by pinch-hitter Will Smith nearly turned the inning around. However, Bard walked Muncy, and Chris Taylor’s flyout ended the inning.
The victory highlighted the Dodgers’ ability to win games through a collective effort. Max Muncy commented on the team’s approach, saying, “There’s so many different ways you can win a game. That last inning for us proved it. We had a bunch of guys just taking good at-bats and trying to string some things together and not let the moment get too big.” Ryan Yarbrough, who pitched three innings of relief, received the victory, while Brusdar Graterol earned his fifth save.
Kershaw’s Solo Shot
Despite giving up a solo home run to Elehuris Montero, Kershaw showed his resilience on the mound. Montero’s home run in the fifth inning gave the Rockies a 1-0 lead, marking the 13th homer Kershaw has given up this season. However, Kershaw’s performance was not overshadowed by this setback. He reflected on his pitching choices, mentioning that his changeup served him well in certain situations, saying, “Three of them were OK. They just had some guys where a changeup is a good pitch.”
Defensive Prowess
The game also showcased the defensive abilities of both teams. Muncy responded to the Rockies’ home run with a solo shot in the seventh inning, tying the game. However, the Rockies’ defense made their presence known with a double play in the same inning. Alan Trejo’s diving stop and tag on Chris Taylor, followed by the throw to first base to get Enrique Hernandez, resulted in the Rockies’ third double play of the game. The Dodgers challenged the out call at second base, but it was upheld.
Blach’s Solid Performance
Despite the loss, Rockies starter Ty Blach showcased a solid performance. He pitched six innings, allowing only one run and three hits. The left-hander struck out two batters and walked two. Blach’s effort was commendable, but it was not enough to secure a victory against the resilient Dodgers.
Clayton Kershaw’s return to the mound ignited hope for the Los Angeles Dodgers as they strive for success in the upcoming playoffs. Kershaw’s strong performance, combined with a collective team effort, led the Dodgers to their fifth consecutive win against the Rockies. The team’s persistence and ability to win games in various ways were on display, creating excitement for the future. With Kershaw back in the rotation, the Dodgers look forward to maintaining their lead in the NL West and making a strong playoff run.
