In a surprising turn of events during qualifying for the Brazilian Grand Prix, McLaren driver Lando Norris secured pole position for the sprint race. Despite a slow first sector compared to the Red Bull drivers, Norris made up time over the rest of the lap to claim the top spot. This remarkable performance left the young Briton in disbelief, as he didn’t consider his lap to be particularly exceptional.
McLaren chose a strategic approach for the SQ3 session by sending both their cars out on track first. Oscar Piastri set the initial benchmark with a time of 1m11.189s. However, Norris’s final lap overshadowed Piastri’s time and secured him pole position. Throughout the session, Norris had to endure a nerve-wracking wait as the Red Bulls and Mercedes drivers showed great strength in the opening sector. Max Verstappen seemed poised to surpass Norris, as he was ahead on the split time by the end of the second sector. Yet Verstappen couldn’t maintain his pace, ultimately placing behind Norris. Sergio Perez, on the other hand, initially took the lead with the fastest opening split time but was overtaken by his teammate Verstappen and settled for third place on the sprint grid.
While the attention was on the battle for pole position, several drivers in the midfield also delivered noteworthy performances. Yuki Tsunoda impressed by securing the sixth position on the grid. Charles Leclerc, however, couldn’t deliver a lap better than seventh. Despite a disappointing qualifying session so far this season, Daniel Ricciardo managed to finish eighth, placing him above his teammate Lando Norris. Carlos Sainz and Oscar Piastri completed the top 10.
Mercedes and McLaren narrowly escaped elimination in the SQ2 session. Both teams managed to improve their times in a quick succession of final laps, bumping the Haas cars out of the top 10. Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg had initially shown promise after their first attempt, but were ultimately outperformed by the Mercedes and McLaren drivers.
It should be noted that several drivers, including Sergio Perez, George Russell, and Lewis Hamilton, were summoned by the stewards for allegedly failing to follow instructions regarding the maximum lap time. The outcome of these investigations could have serious consequences for the drivers involved.
The opening sprint qualifying stage was cut short due to a collision between Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso at the Curva do Sol. Ocon, who was fighting to escape the drop zone, unfortunately lost control of his car and crashed into Alonso. The impact left Alonso with significant damage, rendering him unable to continue running in the session. The incident prompted a red flag, resulting in Lance Stroll being stranded in 17th place for the sprint grid.
Zhou Guanyu, representing Alfa Romeo, was eliminated in the first stage of qualifying, along with AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly. Valtteri Bottas, a Mercedes driver, had a disappointing performance and ended up in 14th place. These drivers will undoubtedly be looking for opportunities to redeem themselves in the upcoming races.
Lando Norris’s pole position at the Brazilian Grand Prix was a true testament to his skill and determination. Despite initial sector struggles, Norris managed to piece together a brilliant lap that placed him ahead of his more favored competitors. With the sprint race promising an exciting battle for the top positions, fans can only anticipate the thrilling action that awaits them at Interlagos.
