Aston Martin has introduced a new optimisation package for its sidepod concept at the Canadian Grand Prix to enhance its aerodynamic performance. The team has been able to achieve significant progress in the current season due to the additional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind tunnel time they received for their poor performance in the previous season. The team has also benefited from a design shift that it undertook at last year’s Spanish Grand Prix by moving to the downwash sidepod concept favoured by Red Bull, AlphaTauri and Alpine.

The Optimisation Package

The new package introduced by Aston Martin is an optimisation of the downwash-style concept that they have been following. The core DNA of the concept has been retained, but the design has been heavily tweaked to enhance the aerodynamic performance. The team has made modifications in various components of the car, such as the Side Impact Structures (SIS), radiators, and other power unit ancillaries, to maximise the benefits of the downwash-style concept.

To improve the flow around the sidepod and enhance the interaction with the floor, the team has made significant changes. The inlet now has a much deeper undercut, and the bodywork is tucked in tighter to the ancillaries packed within. The flank and rearward ramp section of the sidepod bodywork have also been modified to take advantage of the upstream alterations. The most significant change is in the position and shape of the water slide on top of the sidepod. The channel is now set back and much narrower, with a steeper decline into the lower section of the bodywork. The narrowing of the channel has resulted in a wider shoulder section, a trait developed by Alpine and Ferrari when they switched concepts.

The outer floor fence has also been amended, with the serrated step section moved forward to allow the addition of a semi-circular step before the fence merges with the downward floor bulge. Meanwhile, at the rear of the car, there are changes to the engine cover, with a letterbox-style outlet present in the spine, and the shark fin has been trimmed to suit, as it hangs above the bodywork.

Challenges Ahead

Aston Martin has set its sights on catching Red Bull ahead. However, the team must also be mindful of both Mercedes and Ferrari, both of which have made significant conceptual changes to their sidepods and floors in recent races. The competition is fierce, and every team is trying to gain an edge over their rivals.

Aston Martin has made significant progress this season, and their new optimisation package for the sidepod concept is a testament to their commitment to stay ahead of the competition. The team’s early commitment to the downwash-style concept has given them a head start over their rivals, and they have been able to reorganise their physical components to maximise the benefits of the concept. With the new changes introduced, it remains to be seen if Aston Martin can continue their upward trajectory and challenge the top teams in the upcoming races.
