In the world of motorsports, the pursuit of excellence often comes with its fair share of challenges and obstacles. Porsche’s journey in the 2024 IMSA SportsCar Championship was no exception. The team faced a daunting task of redeeming themselves after a disappointing debut at Daytona the year before. With hybrid battery and gearbox problems plaguing their 963 car, victory seemed out of reach. However, through the collective efforts of the engineering brain farm at PPM and their skilled drivers, Porsche managed to turn the tide in their favor.
As the 2024 IMSA SportsCar Championship season opener unfolded, Porsche’s 963 car faced a new set of challenges. The No. 6 car, despite placing fourth, was penalized for a “failure to adhere to controlled powertrain parameters.” However, the team swiftly took corrective measures by identifying and distributing software fixes across all four machines, ensuring that the issue wouldn’t recur. The other 963s, including the customer cars, received warnings but were spared penalties.
Porsche’s LMDh factory director, Urs Kuratle, shed light on the root of the penalty. He explained that the issue emerged from excessive power generation during the charging phase, particularly near the Bus Stop Chicane. The system experienced peaks of power that surpassed its limits. However, through adjustments and corrections, Porsche managed to control the power output. This allowed Felipe Nasr to clinch a hard-fought victory, beating pre-event favorite Cadillac by a mere 2 seconds.
To gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by Porsche, we turned to PPM’s managing director for the program, Jonathan Diuguid, and Raul Prados, the lead race engineer of the victorious No. 7 car. Diuguid acknowledged that the No. 6 car was the first to experience the powertrain issues, while the other car remained unscathed. Learning from this, the team swiftly implemented precautions on the No. 7 car, preemptively applying solutions to avoid repeating the same mistake.
Prados, however, couldn’t explain why the issue only affected one car. He speculated that it might be a timing-related anomaly. Nevertheless, he emphasized the complexity of the systems in place to regulate energy regeneration and deployment. The Bosch MGU-Ks, common to all GTP cars, require precise control. Factors such as brake lock-up or driver behavior can trigger violations. The team counteracted this by extensive communication with the drivers, ensuring they were aware of the settings and limitations.
Diuguid further delved into the intricacies of the systems, highlighting their complexity. He mentioned that it takes a specific combination of scenarios to push the controllers beyond their limits. Factors like brake lock-ups or aggressive driving can disrupt the system. Despite the team’s diligent planning, they had to react swiftly to address the issue during the race. Implementing countermeasures meant sacrificing performance, as larger margins had to be given to the control limits. Porsche is currently studying the impact of these measures.
In contrast to our everyday experience of updating software on our smartphones and laptops, Porsche’s 963s did not require any system reboots. The necessary software resided in the car’s electronic brain. However, the drivers had to select the correct settings through the steering wheel controls. The team’s first course of action was to assist the drivers in navigating the parameters. Fortunately, no software updates were necessary, sparing valuable time during the race.
