In a surprising move, the Seattle Mariners and the Minnesota Twins completed a five-player trade on Monday. The centerpiece of the deal is second baseman Jorge Polanco, who will be joining the Mariners. In exchange, the Twins will receive outfield prospect Gabriel Gonzalez, reliever Justin Topa, starter Anthony DeSclafani, and minor league pitcher Darren Bowen. Additionally, cash considerations will be provided by the Mariners. The trade was announced by both teams on Monday night.
The addition of Jorge Polanco to the Mariners’ roster is expected to bolster their offense. The team has been actively seeking strong bats to complement its already impressive starting pitching. Polanco, an All-Star in 2019, has demonstrated consistent performance throughout his 10-year career in the big leagues. With a career slash line of .269/.334/.446, he is considered a well-above-league-average hitter. Polanco is likely to be placed in the middle of the Mariners’ lineup, alongside talented players such as Julio Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford, and Cal Raleigh. The team has also made significant offseason additions with the inclusion of Mitch Garver and Mitch Haniger.
The decision to trade Polanco comes as the Twins look to manage their payroll after winning the American League Central last year. By moving Polanco, the Twins will be able to alleviate some financial burden. The team had exercised a $10.5 million option on Polanco’s contract this winter, and his deal included a $12 million club option for 2025. Losing players like Sonny Gray, Kenta Maeda, Tyler Mahle, and Emilio Pagan to free agency has further incentivized the Twins to shed payroll. The trade with the Mariners is a step in that direction.
For the Twins, Gabriel Gonzalez is considered the key prospect in this trade. As a 20-year-old right-handed-hitting corner outfielder, he showed promise during last season, particularly at the Single-A level with an impressive slash line of .348/.403/.530. However, his performance dipped in 181 at-bats at the High-A level, where he struggled with a .215/.290/.387 line. Gonzalez is regarded as a borderline top-100 prospect, and his ability to make solid contact with the ball is considered his standout skill.
Justin Topa, who has shown his ability to thrive as a reliever for the Mariners, will now join the Twins. Last season, he posted an impressive 2.61 ERA over 75 games, striking out 61 batters and walking only 18 in 69 innings. With a career ground ball rate of 56.5%, Topa brings a valuable skillset to the Twins’ bullpen.
Anthony DeSclafani, another player acquired by the Twins in this trade, is a starting pitcher. His $12 million salary will be partly covered by the cash considerations provided by the Mariners. This trade marks the second time DeSclafani has been traded this winter, previously being part of a deal that sent former Cy Young winner Robbie Ray to the San Francisco Giants. While DeSclafani posted a 4.88 ERA in 99⅔ innings last season, his performance was hampered by a flexor strain in his right elbow, causing him to miss the final two months of the season.
Darren Bowen, a 23-year-old minor league pitcher, is the final player included in the trade. He was selected as a 13th-round pick out of UNC-Pembroke in 2022 and had a solid performance in his debut minor league season, posting a 3.88 ERA over 55⅔ innings.
This trade has undoubtedly brought significant changes to the rosters of both the Mariners and the Twins. The Mariners have strengthened their offense with the addition of an experienced and consistent hitter in Jorge Polanco. On the other hand, the Twins have acquired promising prospects and valuable bullpen support, which will aid their goal of shedding payroll while maintaining a competitive edge. It remains to be seen how these changes will play out on the field, but one thing is certain: this trade has shaken up the MLB landscape and provided ample fodder for fans and analysts alike to speculate about the upcoming season.
