The National Football League (NFL) has increased its efforts to educate players on its gambling policy following a series of violations. The league has introduced mandatory education sessions for rookies, and league officials are visiting team facilities to clarify prohibited activities amidst the proliferation of sports gambling. Jeff Miller, the NFL executive vice president of communications, public affairs, and policy, emphasized the importance of educating players on the policy, stating that “the world has changed over the last few years.” The availability of sports gambling has rapidly increased, and it is now possible to place a bet on many different things with just a few touches on a phone, which was not possible a few years ago. When it comes to any potential mixed messaging because of NFL owners’ willingness to enter sponsorship relationships with sportsbooks, the NFL insists that there is no double standard. Perel stated that the sponsorship relationships are about bringing in new fans, keeping fans engaged, and giving them opportunities to engage in these things, whereas players are subject to tight restrictions on their gambling activities to protect the integrity of the game.
