Red Bull has announced that four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will join Daniel Ricciardo at a special event in September at the Nurburgring. Vettel will drive the 2011 RB7 car, while Ricciardo will drive the RB8 from the following season. It will be the first time in a decade that F1 machinery has run at the famous track. However, Max Verstappen will not be joining the event, as Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko quickly ruled out the idea.

Verstappen Not Allowed to Join

Verstappen had hoped to participate in the event, but was told he was not allowed by Marko. Verstappen said that he would have loved to do it, but Marko knew that he would try to push the limits. While Verstappen could have persuaded his bosses to change their minds, he did not want to start unnecessary issues. Verstappen admitted that he would have been tempted to go for a lap record attempt, but the demo runs are purely for show, and teams have to run with demo tires.

Verstappen’s Thoughts on the Nurburgring

Verstappen thinks that running at the Nurburgring in an old car is not dramatically different from some of the venues that F1 runs on. He believes that driving at the Nurburgring is risky, but it depends on how you hit a barrier, which is normally not the plan. Verstappen hopes that one day he can participate in an event at the Nurburgring, ideally in an F1 car, but if not allowed, then maybe one day in a GT3 car.
