Carlos Alcaraz, the 19-year-old Spanish tennis player, showed his dominance on the court as he won his second consecutive Barcelona Open title. Playing on the Rafa Nadal center court, Alcaraz was relaxed and in control as he watched the home crowd dance during a late changeover. He defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-3, 6-4 to secure his third title of the year and ninth of his career.

Staying Relaxed is Important

Alcaraz revealed that he and his team talked about staying relaxed before the match. He believes that staying relaxed is the most important part for him to play tough moments. He forgets about his mistakes and everything else and just focuses on himself, the court, the racket, and the final.

Impressive Record

Alcaraz has an impressive record of 10-1 in Barcelona and has won his last 14 tour matches on Spanish soil. He had not successfully defended a title before this win. Nadal was the last player to win consecutive titles in Barcelona from 2016-18. Alcaraz will try to defend his title at the upcoming Madrid Open.

Comfortable Win

Alcaraz won the match with 26 winners and seven unforced errors. He and Tsitsipas exchanged breaks early in the first set, but Alcaraz eventually took control to comfortably secure his fourth consecutive win over the fifth-ranked Greek. Tsitsipas was trying to win his first title in Barcelona after twice losing the final to Nadal in 2018 and 2021.

Alcaraz’s success has fascinated the older players on tour, including Tsitsipas, who sees Alcaraz’s achievements as an example that will hopefully push them to do better. Alcaraz has shown tremendous growth in his game and looks set to achieve more success in the future.
