Brett Favre, the Hall of Fame quarterback, announced on Thursday that he will no longer be pursuing a defamation lawsuit against former NFL player and national sports commentator Pat McAfee. Favre tweeted that he and McAfee have settled the litigation, and that they both prefer to talk about football.
McAfee confirmed on “The Pat McAfee Show” that Favre has dropped the lawsuit against him. He reiterated that he has no personal knowledge of any case involving Favre in Mississippi and that he respects Favre’s Hall of Fame career.
Favre’s Other Defamation Lawsuits
In February, Favre sued McAfee for calling him a “thief” and accusing him of “stealing from poor people in Mississippi” on his show and Twitter. Favre also has defamation lawsuits pending against former NFL player Shannon Sharpe and Mississippi Auditor Shad White.
Sharpe’s attorneys have asked a federal judge to dismiss the case, arguing that Mississippi law protects Sharpe’s right to make critical comments on Favre’s involvement in a matter of public concern.
White’s attorneys have said that Favre cannot prove malice in any statements the auditor has made about the welfare case. Favre is a defendant in a civil lawsuit from the state seeking to recoup some of the misspent money.
Despite these ongoing lawsuits, Favre has decided to drop the lawsuit against McAfee. The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed, and a spokesperson for Favre declined to comment further.
