The Atlanta Falcons have made a radical decision in their pursuit of a new head coach. After an extensive search that saw 14 candidates being considered, including well-known names like Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh, the Falcons have chosen to hire Raheem Morris, making him the first former NFL head coach to be hired by owner Arthur Blank in his over 20-year tenure. While some may question this decision, it represents a bold move to bring stability and success to the franchise.
A Familiar Face
For Morris, this is a familiar return to Flowery Branch, Georgia, where he previously served as Atlanta’s interim coach for 11 games in the 2020 season. Despite a less-than-stellar record of 4-7 during his interim tenure, Morris was not given the full-time position at that time. However, after three years and the dismissal of Arthur Smith, the Falcons have decided to bring Morris back and entrust him with the future of the team.
Morris, 47, brings with him a wealth of experience, having spent the past three seasons as the Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator. His tenure with the Rams culminated in a Super Bowl victory in 2021, showcasing his ability to lead a successful defense. This will be Morris’ second opportunity as a full-time NFL head coach, having previously served in that role for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011. Though his record with the Buccaneers was not impressive at 17-31, Morris has had the opportunity to learn and grow from that experience.
One of the advantages that Morris will have as he takes over as head coach is a roster filled with talented players. On the defensive side of the ball, the Falcons boast standout performers such as second-team All-Pro safety Jessie Bates III, cornerback A.J. Terrell, and defensive lineman Grady Jarrett. On offense, Morris will have the luxury of working with skill-position players like talented tight end Kyle Pitts, dynamic receiver Drake London, and versatile running backs Bijan Robinson and Tyler Allgeier. Additionally, two familiar faces from Morris’ previous stint with the Falcons, left tackle Jake Matthews and right guard Chris Lindstrom, provide stability on the offensive line.
Now that the Falcons have secured their head coach, the next task at hand for Morris will be assembling a coaching staff. During his time with the Rams, Morris worked closely with quarterbacks/pass-game coordinator Zac Robinson, who is considered a prime candidate for the offensive coordinator position in Atlanta. While Morris will undoubtedly explore multiple options for his coaching staff, Robinson’s experience and familiarity with Morris could give him an edge in securing the role.
One of the immediate challenges that Morris will face is addressing the team’s quarterback situation. With Taylor Heinicke and Desmond Ridder currently on the roster, there is uncertainty surrounding the position. Blank has been critical of the team’s quarterback play in the past, naming it as one of the reasons for Smith’s dismissal. As Morris takes the reins, he will need to evaluate the quarterback options available and make decisions that will ultimately shape the team’s offensive game plan.
A Bright Future
While some may question the Falcons’ decision to hire Raheem Morris as their new head coach, there is an underlying sense of excitement and promise. This bold move represents a departure from the norm and a willingness to embrace change in the pursuit of success. With a talented roster and Morris’ experience and knowledge, the Falcons are poised to embark on a new era under their newly appointed head coach. The future looks promising, and only time will tell if this unconventional decision will pay off for the Atlanta Falcons.
