Jim Poole, a former professional baseball player who pitched in the big leagues for 11 seasons, has passed away at the age of 57. Poole, who succumbed to complications related to ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), was surrounded by his family in the Atlanta area at the time of his passing. His alma mater, Georgia Tech, announced the sad news of his demise. Poole’s battle with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, began two years ago, and it is with heavy hearts that we bid farewell to this incredible athlete and human being.
Poole began his journey in Major League Baseball in 1990 with the Los Angeles Dodgers and later played for esteemed teams such as the Baltimore Orioles, Cleveland Indians, and San Francisco Giants. Throughout his 431 appearances, Poole showcased his talents as a left-handed reliever, leaving a lasting impact on the game. While his career statistics reflect his skill and dedication, it is his performance in the 1995 World Series that stands out as the pinnacle of his career.
During the 1995 World Series between the Cleveland Indians and the Atlanta Braves, Poole found himself in a crucial situation. In Game 6, with the Indians striving for a win to force a decisive Game 7, Poole was called upon to relieve Dennis Martinez in the fifth inning, with two outs and two runners on base. Poole displayed nerves of steel as he struck out Fred McGriff, a legendary Hall of Fame slugger, to escape the dangerous situation. However, in the following inning, David Justice of the Braves hit a solo home run, securing Atlanta’s victory and championship. The outcome was beyond Poole’s control, but it was a defining moment that left an indelible mark on his career.
In addition to his memorable World Series appearance, Poole made significant contributions during the playoffs for the Cleveland Indians in 1998. Although the Indians fell short against the New York Yankees in the American League Championship Series, Poole demonstrated his skill in six postseason appearances. Throughout these games, he yielded only four hits and two runs in 7 1/3 innings while striking out nine batters. His postseason performances showcased his ability to perform under high-pressure situations, solidifying his place as a respected member of the team.
When reflecting on Jim Poole’s achievements, it is important to remember his roots at Georgia Tech. Hailing from Rochester, New York, Poole arrived at Georgia Tech and played an instrumental role in the Yellow Jackets’ victory in four consecutive Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament championships. His impact on the team was undeniable, as he pitched in 120 games, striking out an impressive 263 batters in 188 innings. Poole’s career statistics at Georgia Tech, including his record-breaking 22 career saves, secured his place in the school record books. He was honored as an All-ACC selection in his final two seasons and was later enshrined in the Georgia Tech Sports Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy with the team.
Jim Poole’s contributions to baseball did not end with his retirement from the game. Following his stint in the big leagues, he returned to his alma mater to serve as a dedicated fundraiser and supporter of the Georgia Tech baseball program. Furthermore, he took on the role of pitching coach at Johns Creek High School in the suburbs of Atlanta. However, his impact was not limited to the confines of the baseball field.
After being diagnosed with ALS in 2021, Poole became an advocate for raising awareness of the disease. He passionately worked to shed light on ALS through various initiatives, including hosting an ALS Awareness Day during the 2022 baseball season. During this event, Poole’s alma mater donned shirts bearing his name, and both teams wore honorary wristbands to show solidarity with those affected by the disease. By using his platform to raise awareness, Poole showcased his unwavering determination to make a difference, even in the face of great adversity.
Jim Poole’s impact on and off the baseball field will be remembered and cherished by many. His unwavering dedication to the game, his resilience in the face of challenges, and his commitment to raising awareness for ALS have solidified his place as a Georgia Tech legend. In honoring his memory, Georgia Tech has retired Poole’s jersey number, 21, and given it to the player who exemplifies self-determination, a strong academic work ethic, and a high character both on and off the field. Poole’s legacy will continue to inspire generations of athletes and serve as a reminder of the power of resilience, compassion, and the human spirit.
Jim Poole is survived by his wife, Kim, three children, and two grandchildren. As we remember and celebrate his life, let us hold onto the lessons he taught us through his actions and the impact he made both within the world of baseball and beyond. Jim Poole’s legacy will forever serve as a shining example of what it means to be a true champion – one who leaves a lasting impact on the lives of others through their accomplishments, integrity, and the way they navigate the challenges life throws their way. May he rest in peace and may his memory continue to inspire us all.
