The New York Yankees have made the difficult decision to release third baseman Josh Donaldson, bringing an end to his short and disappointing tenure with the team. This move comes as the Yankees reflect on the series of decisions that led them to finish in last place. Donaldson, a former American League MVP, was acquired from the Minnesota Twins in a trade shortly after the end of the lockout in March 2022. The Yankees had hoped that the three-time All-Star could stabilize the third-base position and provide a boost to their offense. However, it quickly became apparent that this was a failed experiment.
A Season Plagued by Injury and Ineffectiveness
Donaldson’s performance during the 2022 season was less than stellar. He finished with a disappointing .222/.308/.374 slash line, struggling to make a significant impact on the team’s offense. Unfortunately, his struggles continued into this year. In just 33 games, Donaldson managed to hit 10 home runs but batted a dismal .142/.225/.434. It was clear that something was not right, and it appeared that both injury and ineffectiveness were plaguing the veteran third baseman.
Throughout the season, Donaldson found himself on the injured list multiple times. His first stint on the IL began on April 5 and lasted until June 2 due to a strained right hamstring. Just as he was starting to regain his form, a strained calf sidelined him once again in mid-July. Realizing that Donaldson would likely miss the majority of the season, the Yankees made the decision to place him on the 60-day injured list. It seemed like the injury bug was determined to keep Donaldson off the field and hinder his ability to contribute.
The Yankees’ Descent into Mediocrity
With a record of 63-68, the Yankees find themselves at the bottom of the AL East. This marks their first sub-.500 season since 1992, representing a stunning downfall for a team that had made six consecutive playoff appearances. Understandably, fans are frustrated by the team’s collapse, and Donaldson has become a target for criticism. His underwhelming performance and inability to live up to expectations have only added fuel to the fire of the Yankees’ disappointing season.
Adding to Donaldson’s woes during his time with the Yankees was a one-game suspension handed down by Major League Baseball. The suspension came as a result of Donaldson referring to Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson as “Jackie,” in reference to Jackie Robinson, the trailblazing player who broke MLB’s color barrier in 1947. Although Donaldson apologized to Anderson, stating that his comment was unintentionally disrespectful, Anderson deemed it unnecessary and disrespectful. This incident further tarnished Donaldson’s reputation and cast a shadow over his time in pinstripes.
It is important to note that Donaldson was once considered one of the best players in baseball. He earned the AL MVP title in 2015 while playing for the Toronto Blue Jays and experienced a resurgence with the Atlanta Braves four years later. This resurgence ultimately led to a lucrative four-year, $92 million free agent contract with the Minnesota Twins. However, it soon became clear that Donaldson and the Twins were not a good match, leading to the team seeking potential trade partners. The Yankees agreed to take on Donaldson, along with utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa and catcher Ben Rortvedt, in exchange for infielder Gio Urshela and catcher Gary Sanchez. Unfortunately, this partnership proved to be ill-fated, as Donaldson’s time with the Yankees has come to a disappointing end.
Josh Donaldson’s time with the New York Yankees can only be described as a disappointment. Injuries, poor performance, and a controversial incident have all contributed to the downfall of a once-promising player. The Yankees, now facing the reality of a last-place finish, have chosen to part ways with Donaldson, releasing him and giving him an opportunity to find a new team where he may have a chance at redemption. Only time will tell if Donaldson can resurrect his career and regain his former glory.
