The tournament will begin on June 20, 2024, and will conclude with the final on July 14, 2024. CONMEBOL has confirmed that defending champions Argentina are among the 10 South American teams who will participate in the tournament, with six additional slots reserved for guest teams from Concacaf. The four guest CONMEBOL teams that will participate have been determined based on the results of the 2022 Women’s Copa America: Brazil (champion), Colombia (runner-up), Argentina (third place), and Paraguay (fourth place).
The host cities and stadiums for the 25-day tournament will be announced soon, along with the full competition schedule. The Copa América features all South American national teams, including Brazil and Argentina, but has also historically invited guest countries to participate. The U.S. has participated in the tournament four times previously, most recently in 2016, when they reached the semifinals. That tournament was also held in the United States.
For women’s national teams, Concacaf has invited the top four CONMEBOL national teams to participate in the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup. The inaugural edition of this 12-team tournament will also be played in the United States. The two Concacaf teams that will participate in the 2024 Summer Olympics (United States and Jamaica or Canada) will qualify directly for the 2024 Concacaf W Gold Cup. The remaining six Concacaf teams will be determined through the 2023 Road to Concacaf W Gold Cup.
Ecuador had originally been expected to organize the 2024 Copa América but opted out due to public security issues.
CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domínguez expressed his excitement for the upcoming tournament, stating that “the Copa América is one of the most prestigious tournaments in world football, and we are thrilled to bring it to the United States for the first time in its storied history. We look forward to seeing the best teams from South America and Concacaf compete for the title of Copa América champion.”
Argentina is the defending Copa América and World Cup champion, and will look to defend their title on American soil in 2024. With guest teams from Concacaf also in the mix, the tournament promises to be a highly competitive and exciting event for football fans across the Americas.
